More About Ivy Reiss


Ivy has been on the GTA art and culture scene as an event host, coordinator, and spoken word performer and writer for nearly ten years. She re-branded the successful Oakville Lit Cafe reading series in 2012, turning into a go-to hub for poets and writers from all over the GTA, western Ontario, and as far as the USA and UK. In April 2013, these successes landed the Lit Café a Feature spot on Cogeco’s Arts Matter television program. By 2016, full-houses were common and the venue had moved to the Joshua Creek Art and Heritage Centre, that April Ivy passed the reigns on to 905 author and teacher Josie DiSciasscio-Andrews, and the Lit Café is stronger than ever.

 

As a spoken word performer, Ivy has have Featured at numerous venues since 2010, including Toronto’s longest running and most prestigious reading series ArtBar twice, Loose Leaf Poets Reading Series, on CIUT’s 89.5FM Howl Radio with host Nik Beat, as winner of The Best Poet of the Month series at the Free Times café, The Oakville Ensemble, numerous Poetry Month events every April, and many more. Her poetry has been featured in two anthologies, three issues of the “Labour of Love” poetry magazine.

As a contributing art and culture writer for Luxury Globe Media (2017-18), Ivy contributed eighteen articles on theatre, event, and culinary reviews, press releases, and artist interviews focused on the GTA, western Ontario, and the Muskoka region.

In October 2016, Ivy visited the remote fly-in community of Naujaat (formerly Repulse Bay) for 25 days.

During her stay, Ivy lived with the Inuit in their homes and investigated the education, healthcare, food, and housing conditions, and gave talks at the elementary, high-school, and to the cadets on the importance of post-secondary education, the settled land claims, and how the future of Canada hinges on its youngest, and fully bilingual population; the Inuit. In addition, she conducted over forty hours of interviews, with the town Hamlet SAO, teachers, principles, vice-principles, the wildlife officer, the Northern Inn chef, healthcare providers, locals, representatives from a visiting diamond mine, and more. Ivy is currently writing about these experiences.

 

Ivy is in-demand as a keynote speaker, writer, editor, event promoter, and host. Her anticipated collection of poetry, There is a Place, is launching 2019-2020.


She also enjoys tutoring youth and ESL students, especially in English, linguistics, and world history, and mentoring writers in areas ranging from various writing styles, genres, and marketing.

 

Ivy holds her Honours Bachelor of Arts; Specialist in English Literature and Major in German Studies from the University of Toronto.

 

As Editor-in-Chief of The Artis, Ivy and her team's main objective is putting the 905 on the map.
